Garage Door Accident Prevention

07/29/2013 Back To Blog

Using garage door safety precautions can keep accidents down to a bare-minimum. This is often overlooked by many property owners because the garage area is not used as frequently as the rest of the home. Accidents involving overhead garage doors exceed over 25,000 reported personal injuries based on the government’s statistics, most of which include children. Below are some safety measures that will lessen the chance of related incidents from occurring in your home.

Precaution #1-Watch Your Children

Most accidents involving kids occur during playtime. Children are known to run and play all throughout the house. The garage area should be the exception to the rule. It should be off limits to any child’s-play whatsoever. This may not sound fun and could be considered a bit harsh to some, but research shows that over 13,000 little ones are injured or even killed yearly as a result of garage door mishaps. This is a serious issue that must not be taken lightly.

Precaution #2-Adhere to Mounting Guidelines

During the installation, make sure to follow the mounting guidelines to the letter. Such procedures include mounting the control buttons no less than five feet from the ground, which makes it difficult for small children to reach it. These rules are in place for a reason, to prevent accidents. It is best to have a professional do the installation because they are fully aware of the safety requirements.

Inspect Your Garage Door Periodically

Considering that your electronic garage door is a large moving part of the home, its maintenance should not be neglected. The falling of such a heavy object could be catastrophic especially if landing on top of someone. Periodically, inspect the door panels and connecting components such as the springs, rollers, and garage door cables. By doing so, you will know if you need to adjust, repair, or replace failing parts that can lead to door failure, and possibly injury.
